Person measuring a patio with a tape measure before buying outdoor furniture

Outdoor furniture returns happen for one reason more than any other: it does not fit. The product photos look fine, the dimensions look fine, then the dining set arrives and the chairs cannot be pulled out without hitting the railing.

This guide walks through the four measurements that actually matter (clearance, seating space, table width, fold-away footprint), and the rules of thumb European garden furniture buyers use to size a balcony, a terrace, or a full garden. Numbers are in centimetres; sizing assumes adult use.

The rules of thumb

Four clearances that decide whether it fits

The product spec gives you the dimensions of the furniture. These four clearances translate that into whether the furniture works in your actual space.

  • 90 cm walking clearance: any path you use regularly, including doors and gates
  • 60 cm chair pull-out: behind every dining chair, to slide in and out
  • 60 cm seating per person: at a table edge, for elbows and plates
  • 30 cm wall clearance: against walls or railings where no one walks

Apply these before you look at any product page. They knock out roughly half of patio dining sets sold online, which are scaled for show-home photos rather than real apartment terraces.

By space type

What fits where

Three space categories, three different sizing logics. The same 8 m squared can be a generous balcony or a tight courtyard depending on shape, doors, and railings.

01

Balcony, 2 to 6 m squared

Bistro logic · fold-away

One small table (60 by 60 cm or 70 cm round) and two bistro chairs is the realistic ceiling. A folding table mounted on the wall gives you the same surface area while clearing the floor for laundry, plants, and bin storage.

Avoid sun loungers, sofas, and 3-piece bistro sets. They photograph well, fit on paper, and block the doorway in real use. See our balcony furniture guide for the full list.

02

Terrace, 6 to 15 m squared

Lounge or dining, pick one

Big enough for a 4-seat dining set OR a 3-seat lounge sofa with side table. Not both. Modular sofas earn their keep here because the same components reconfigure for a quiet afternoon and a Saturday dinner.

Sun lounger fits if the terrace is 3+ m long on one side. A standard lounger is 200 cm long, 70 cm wide, plus 60 cm of clearance to lift the back.

03

Garden, 15+ m squared

Multi-zone is realistic

Big enough for two distinct zones: a dining table near the kitchen door, a lounge group further out. Or a single 6-seat extending table that handles both. Walking paths between zones still need 90 cm.

This is where extending tables come into their own. See garden table design for the trade-offs between fixed, extending, and folding tables.

Dimensions by piece

The numbers worth memorising

The European outdoor furniture catalogue clusters around a small set of standard sizes. Once you know them, you can read product specs in seconds and know whether a piece works in your space without re-measuring.

PieceStandard sizeSeatsFootprint with clearance
Bistro table, round60 to 70 cm diameter2130 × 130 cm

Footprint with clearance is the figure that matters. If your terrace is 200 cm wide, a 180 × 90 cm dining table fits geometrically but leaves nothing for chairs to pull out. A 120 × 80 cm table is the realistic 6-person upper limit there.

Step by step

Five-minute sizing method

The method below works for any outdoor space, regardless of shape. Pen, paper, tape measure. No app required.

01
Measure the usable area, not the total area. Subtract any fixed obstructions: drainage covers, AC units, immovable planters, the swing arc of doors. The remaining rectangle is what you actually have to fill.
02
Mark the door swings and traffic lanes. Every door needs a 90 cm clear lane to its full swing arc. If two doors face each other, the lane is the longer of the two arcs.
03
Subtract 90 cm on every walked side, 30 cm against walls. This is your furniture footprint budget. A 4 by 3 m terrace with one door becomes a roughly 220 × 270 cm furniture rectangle. That fits a 4-seat dining set comfortably and a small side table.
04
Allocate seating, then choose dining or lounge. 60 cm of table edge per dining seat, 70 cm of sofa length per lounge seat. If you want both and the rectangle does not allow it, choose dining: outdoor lounge furniture is comfortable for an hour, dining furniture for a whole evening.
05
Choose fold-away vs fixed by frequency of use. Daily-use furniture is fixed. Once-a-week furniture is fold-away. The hinge point is the laundry rule: if you still need the space for laundry, bikes, or bins, fold-away wins regardless of square meterage.
Bottom line

The right size, chosen first

Measure before you browse. The product spec will tell you what fits; the wrong order is browsing first, then trying to fit a 6-seat dining set onto a 6 m squared terrace.

For most European apartment terraces, the practical sweet spot is a 4-seat square or compact rectangular dining set with stackable chairs. Plan range: €299 to €699. For balconies under 6 m squared, a wall-mounted folding table plus two bistro chairs at €149 to €249 covers actual daily use.

Browse our outdoor furniture range by dimension filter, or read the outdoor furniture buying guide for the wider material and style picture. If you are sizing a garden bench specifically, the garden bench guide covers the same logic for benches.

For style-matched outdoor furniture in the Scandinavian or Japandi aesthetic, see our Scandinavian range: lighter visual weight reads correctly on small balconies where heavier-looking pieces would overwhelm the space.

Good to know

Frequently asked.

How much space does a 4-seat patio dining set need?

A 4-seat dining set with the chairs pulled out needs roughly 240 by 240 cm of clear patio floor. The table itself is typically 120 by 80 cm; the 60 cm clearance behind each chair accounts for moving in and out comfortably. If the patio is irregular or has a door swinging into the space, add the door arc to the clearance.

What is the minimum walking clearance around outdoor furniture?

90 cm for any path the user walks regularly, 60 cm for occasional access, 30 cm against walls or railings where no one walks. Doors swinging into the space need the full 90 cm plus the door arc. If two people might cross paths on the same lane (a server with plates, a guest with a drink), 110 cm is more comfortable than the textbook 90.

How much seating space per person on a garden bench?

70 cm of bench length per adult is comfortable, 60 cm is the absolute minimum and feels cramped on hot days when people lean apart. A 180 cm bench seats 2 adults plus a child or 3 adults at a squeeze. A 150 cm bench is a 2-seater, not a 3-seater, regardless of how the listing describes it.

What size dining table fits 6 people outdoors?

180 by 90 cm minimum for 6 adults outdoors. Allow 60 cm of edge per person, plus 20 cm at each short end for serving dishes and salad bowls. Rectangular suits a narrow terrace; round needs 150 cm diameter to seat 6 but takes more floor space overall (270 by 270 cm including chair clearance against 300 by 210 cm for a rectangular).

Is fold-away or modular better for a small balcony?

Fold-away under 6 m squared, modular between 6 and 12 m squared. Fold-away clears the floor when you need the balcony for laundry, bikes, or storage. Modular sofas re-arrange to a 2-seat or 3-seat configuration without buying anything new. For a 3 m squared Berlin balcony, a wall-mounted folding table plus two folding chairs beats any fixed bistro set on every metric except photography.

How much space behind a chair for it to pull out?

60 cm minimum, 75 cm comfortable. A standard outdoor chair pulled fully back from the table takes 50 cm; add 10 to 25 cm for the person to walk behind it. If two people sit back-to-back across separate tables (in a courtyard with two seating zones), that becomes 120 to 150 cm between table edges.
