Solid oak dining chair with a woven cord seat

Dining chairs rarely fail on a bad day. They age in layers: a bit of dust in the rattan weave, a red wine stain that did not quite come out, a screw that has been loose for a year. Three routines stop all of it.

This guide is organised by material (wood, rattan, fabric, leather) and by frequency (monthly, quarterly, yearly). Each chair gets ten minutes a month, half an hour a quarter, an hour a year. More than that is wasted; less than that halves the chair's lifespan.

Wood

Wooden chairs: dry cloth, oil once a year

Wood moves with humidity. It shrinks slightly in winter and expands in summer. Care follows that rhythm.

  • Weekly: dry microfibre cloth over the frame, no pressure. Dust will otherwise grind into the finish over years.
  • As needed: lightly damp cloth with mild soapy water (one drop of dish soap in half a litre), then dry immediately. Never silicone-based furniture polish.
  • Quarterly: check and tighten every screw and joint. Wood chairs creak when tenons loosen; a half-turn is usually enough.
  • Yearly: for oiled chairs, one thin coat of care oil (linseed or hardwax) on the frame. Wipe excess after 20 minutes, cure for 24 hours.

Lacquered chairs (gloss or matte) do not need oil, only the weekly dry wipe. Scratches: use a touch-up pen in the matching shade (€3 to €7 in any DIY shop).

Four materials

What each material needs

The short version per material. Full routine in the sections that follow.

01

Rattan

Lifespan 15 to 25 years

Soft brush or compressed air every four weeks to clear dust from the weave. Never saturate. One coat of linseed oil per year on a soft cloth (one tablespoon does six chairs).

For brittle fibres, fix with wood glue and a cotton bud. A fully broken panel is re-woven by a rattan craftsman for €40 to €80.

02

Fabric

Lifespan 8 to 15 years

Weekly vacuum with upholstery attachment. Blot spills within an hour. Removable covers wash at 30 degrees, air dry only.

Upholstery cleaner once a year (€6 to €10 foam cleaner). Test on the back before going over the seat.

03

Leather

Lifespan 15+ years

Weekly dust with dry microfibre. Every three months, one tablespoon of leather milk in circular motions, left 20 minutes, buffed dry.

Never in direct sun (cracks) and not too close to a radiator (dries out). Use a repair kit (€15 to €25) at the first sign of cracking.

The four routines

Four routines, the entire care load

Sorted by frequency. If you only keep one going, keep the monthly. It alone doubles the lifespan of most chairs.

01
Monthly: 5 minutes per chair.Vacuum the seat, brush the back with a soft brush, wipe the wood frame with a dry cloth. Six chairs is a Sunday-morning job that takes 30 minutes with coffee.
02
Quarterly: 30 minutes for the set.Condition leather with milk. Check fabric for stains and spot-treat with upholstery cleaner. Tighten screws and joints. Test legs for wobble.
03
Yearly: 1 hour for the set.Refresh oiled wood with care oil. Check rattan weave for loose fibres and secure with wood glue. Flip cushions if the model allows. Replace felt glides under the legs (€3 per chair, saves your floor).
04
For spills: now, not later.Blot with kitchen towel, never rub. Cold water afterwards. For red wine, add salt or baking soda, leave 20 minutes, then vacuum. 90 percent of stains lift in the first 60 seconds; after that they become permanent.
Care as investment

Ten minutes a month, fifteen more years

Chairs do not fail suddenly. They age slowly, and care slows the pace.

A well-kept wooden chair lasts 20 years. A neglected one lasts 7. The difference is not the purchase price, it is the ten minutes a month. Over a decade, that is €240 per chair you do not have to spend on a replacement.

Our full dining chair collection ships with material-specific care notes. Prices from €89 (beech) to €199 (upholstered). Pillar: the dining chairs buying guide. Material details: the materials guide.

Good to know

Frequently asked.

How do you clean wooden dining chairs?

Dry microfibre cloth weekly. Damp cloth with mild soapy water for stickiness, dried immediately. Oiled chairs get one thin coat of care oil per year; lacquered chairs just need the dry wipe. Never use silicone polish, it builds up over time and turns yellow.

How do you clean rattan chairs?

Soft brush or compressed air every four weeks to clear dust from the weave. Light damp cloth for stains, then air-dry. Never saturate the cane: water swells the fibres and loosens the weave over weeks. Refresh with linseed oil once a year.

How do you care for fabric upholstery?

Vacuum weekly with an upholstery attachment. Blot spills within the hour, never rub. Removable covers wash at 30 degrees and air-dry; do not tumble dry (shrink risk). Once a year, surface-clean with upholstery foam (test on the back first).

How do you remove red wine stains?

Blot immediately with kitchen towel. Cold water afterwards. On fabric, add salt or baking soda to draw out pigment, leave 20 minutes, then vacuum. On leather, water followed by leather cleaner. Never hot water, it sets the stain permanently.

How often should I tighten screws?

Every three months. Wood chairs move with humidity; loose screws cause creaking and lead to joint failure over years. A half-turn with an allen key or screwdriver is usually enough.

Can I condition leather myself?

Yes. Every three months, one tablespoon of leather milk (€5 to €10 a bottle, lasts two years) on a soft cloth, applied in circular motions, left 20 minutes, buffed with a dry cloth. Keeps leather supple and prevents cracking at the fold points.
