A 28 m² Altbau flat in Berlin Kreuzberg, a 35 m² Haussmann in Paris 11e, a 30 m² canal-house top floor in Amsterdam Oud-West. The dining chair has to do a different job here than in a 100 m² suburban house: it must serve dinner for two on weekdays, six on Sunday, and disappear when the room becomes a living room again at 9 p.m.
Five chair types make that possible. None are luxury, all are sub-€150, and the right combination changes a small flat from cramped to functional. The wrong combination eats your floor.
Stackable, the small-flat default
Stackable wooden chairs are the right answer for most 25 to 40 m² flats. Four chairs stack to 240 cm tall, slim at the base (3 to 5 cm). They live in a hallway, behind a curtain or in the corner of a bedroom.
- Width: 41 to 46 cm, slim enough to slip past sofas and around radiators when carried.
- Weight: 3 to 4 kg each, light enough for one-handed handling.
- Stack height: 4 stacked = 200 to 240 cm, fits under most flat ceilings (260 to 280 cm in Berlin Altbau, 250 to 270 cm in Paris Haussmann).
- Material: beech or ash hold up best for stacking; lacquered finishes resist surface marks where chairs touch.

Three alternatives that beat regular dining chairs in flats under 40 m². Pick one depending on your room.
Folding wooden chair
For households who host only 2 or 3 times a year. Folds to 5 cm thick, slides behind a bookcase or sideboard, comes out when needed. Solid beech frames hold up to 100 kg and read as proper dining chairs once unfolded.
Avoid the metal-frame folding chairs from event suppliers; they wobble and announce themselves as guest seating. Wooden folding chairs blend in.
Bench plus two chairs
Bench on the wall side, two chairs on the open side. The bench takes no extra floor space because it sits flush to the wall. A 160 cm bench seats three adults (versus two and a half regular chairs in the same length).
Bench plus chairs reads warmer than four matching chairs. Common combination: oak bench with two black metal-frame chairs facing it.
Armless wooden chair
The default chair for small rooms. No arms means it tucks fully under the table when not in use, freeing 10 to 12 cm of width per chair. In a 22 m² living-dining room, that is the difference between a comfortable walk-around and squeezing past.
Combine with a slim 80 cm wide table for a 2-person daily setup that extends to 4 with a drop leaf or extension.

Why upholstered chairs shrink a small room
This is the part most small-space guides miss. The chair width on paper is not the chair size in the room. A 50 cm wide upholstered velvet chair reads heavier than a 50 cm wide wooden chair because upholstery has visual mass.
- Wooden, rattan, metal-frame: read light. Air passes through the back; the eye sees the wall behind. Best for rooms under 22 m².
- Upholstered fabric or velvet: read heavy. The back is a solid block of colour. Eats visual space.
- Light wood (oak, beech, ash): reads lighter than dark wood (walnut, stained pine).
- Open-back chairs (Wishbone-style, Windsor): read 30 percent lighter than closed-back chairs of the same width.
The rule for flats under 40 m²: maximum one upholstered piece in the dining-living area. If the sofa is upholstered, the chairs are wood or rattan. If the chairs are upholstered, the sofa is leather. Two large upholstered pieces in the same sightline make any room feel half its size.
One table, two daily, two reserve
