Buying a bar stool in Europe is not the same exercise as buying one in a North American open-plan kitchen. kitchens are smaller on average, islands are narrower, and the buyer cares about delivery windows and local payment methods more than huge ranges.
This short guide goes through the actual decisions: seat height, space around a typical EU island, material, and how delivery and payment work at Furnicher. For the full treatment, the bar stools pillar covers everything.
What fits a European kitchen
European kitchens, particularly in pre-1940 buildings across Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris, are narrower than the European retail average suggests. A typical island in a renovated city apartment is 140 to 180 cm long and 70 to 80 cm deep. Two stools fit comfortably; three is tight.
Heights are international. A European breakfast bar sits at 90 cm, a tall worktop at 95 cm, an actual bar counter at 105 to 110 cm. The rule of thumb counter height minus 25 to 30 cm gives you the seat height.
- 90 cm breakfast bar: 60 to 65 cm seat (kitchen stool)
- 95 cm tall worktop: 65 to 70 cm seat (counter stool)
- 105 to 110 cm bar counter: 76 cm seat (bar stool)
In narrow rooms: choose stools without armrests that slide fully under the worktop. That keeps the walking path through the kitchen clear.
What to decide before you order
Three choices determine whether the stool works or not. Make them in this order.
Height
Measure your counter first. Height is the only decision you cannot change after buying. If between two heights, go lower.
For households with very different user heights: look at gas-lift stools with a 7 cm adjustment range.
Back or no back
Under 45 minutes per session: no backrest, slides fully under the counter. Over 45 minutes (laptop work, long breakfasts): with backrest, adds €20 to €40 to the price.
Material
At the sink: powder-coated metal or oiled wood. Further away at a breakfast bar: rattan or fabric can also work. Velvet only with a removable cover.
