Two wooden kitchen stools at a light oak breakfast bar with a 90 cm worktop

A stool for the kitchen sounds like a simple purchase until you have to choose one. The height has to match the counter, the material has to handle splashes and grease, and swivel versus fixed, with backrest or without, are not taste questions but depend on how long you actually sit on it.

This guide explains which seat height fits which counter, which materials hold up in a real kitchen, and when a bar stool, kitchen stool, or counter stool is the right call. Concrete measurements in cm, no marketing fluff.

Height first

Get the height right, then worry about the rest

Seat height is the one decision you cannot change after buying. Cover, backrest, swivel: those are comfort questions. Wrong height means a return or permanent discomfort, because your knees press the cabinet front or your feet dangle without support.

The EU rule of thumb: counter height minus 25 to 30 cm equals the ideal seat height. A standard kitchen worktop sits at 90 to 92 cm. A breakfast bar or half-height island usually at 95 cm. A classic bar counter at 105 to 110 cm.

  • 90 cm kitchen counter: 60 to 65 cm seat (kitchen stool)
  • 95 cm breakfast bar: 65 to 70 cm seat (counter stool)
  • 105 to 110 cm bar counter: 76 cm seat (bar stool)

If you are between two heights, go lower. A slightly short stool is more comfortable than one where your knees constantly hit the drawer front.

Three stool types

What the names actually mean

Bar stool, kitchen stool, counter stool. The terms get mixed up, but the heights are concrete. Here is the clean split.

01

Kitchen stool

65 cm · Breakfast bar

The most common stool height in kitchens. Fits the standard breakfast bar at 90 cm worktop height. Available with or without backrest, often in wood or powder-coated metal.

Suits most fitted kitchens with a half-height island or a worktop overhang for breakfast seating.

02

Counter stool

65 to 70 cm · Half-height island

Same height class as a kitchen stool. In retail terms, "counter stool" often implies a backrest and upholstery, but seat height is the only reliable criterion. Names vary by maker.

See our breakdown of counter stools versus bar stools for the precise comparison.

03

Bar stool

76 cm · Classic bar counter

The tall version for bar counters at 105 to 110 cm. Useful in homes with a real bar counter, a drinks corner, or a high kitchen island. Too tall for a standard worktop.

Materials

What survives in a real kitchen

The kitchen is the wettest, greasiest part of a home. Splashes at the sink, fat spitting from the pan, the occasional spilled coffee. Material and cover have to handle that, not just look good in the photo.

Material Care Kitchen fit
Solid wood (oiled) Re-oil yearly Excellent
Powder-coated metal Wipe clean Excellent
Faux leather Wipe clean Good
Natural rattan Keep dry Limited (away from sink)
Velvet / fabric High maintenance Only with removable cover

Natural rattan looks great in a kitchen but is sensitive to constant humidity. Not ideal directly above the sink, fine at a breakfast bar further away. See our selection of rattan dining chairs if you want a backed alternative to a stool.

Comfort details

Backrest, swivel, footrest

Comfort features decide how long you actually want to sit on the stool. Breakfast needs different things than a long laptop session.

01
Backrest: from 45 minutes of seated time. If you use the stool for breakfast, snacks, or short reading, you can skip the back. For regular laptop work or long breakfasts, the back makes the difference between 30 minutes and 2 hours of comfortable sitting. Adds €20 to €40 to the price.
02
No backrest: slides under the counter. Important in small kitchens. Backless stools disappear completely under the worktop and free up the walking path. If the counter overhang is under 12 cm, you also want a compact seat under 40 cm wide.
03
Swivel: useful when getting up. Swivel stools turn with you when standing instead of needing to slide back. In tight kitchens with a wall behind the counter, that saves space. Gas-lift stools with a 7 cm adjustment range are the most flexible for households with different-sized users.
04
Footrest: not optional. From 65 cm seat height, most adults cannot reach the floor with their feet. A footrest at 25 to 30 cm height takes the weight off the legs and stops the thighs from pressing on the seat edge. Models without a footrest are a mistake.
The verdict

Which stool you actually need

Measure your counter, then decide.

For a 90 cm breakfast bar: kitchen stool at 65 cm seat height, with footrest, with or without backrest depending on use. For 105 to 110 cm bar counters: bar stool at 76 cm. Wood or powder-coated metal if the stool sits at a worktop daily. Upholstery only if the cover is removable or wipeable.

Browse our bar stool and kitchen stool selection. Prices start at €69, most models sit between €89 and €189. Delivery across the EU in 2 to 5 working days, payment with Klarna or invoice available.

Good to know

Frequently asked.

What seat height do I need for a 90 cm kitchen counter?

For a standard 90 cm kitchen counter you need a stool with a 60 to 65 cm seat height. The rule of thumb is counter height minus 25 to 30 cm. This covers most fitted kitchens in apartments. For a higher 95 cm breakfast bar, a 65 to 70 cm seat is still comfortable.

What is the difference between a bar stool and a kitchen stool?

A bar stool has a 76 cm seat height and fits a classic 105 to 110 cm bar counter. A kitchen stool or counter stool has a 65 cm seat height and fits a breakfast bar or half-height island at 90 to 95 cm. Most kitchens need the lower kitchen stool, not the bar stool.

How many stools fit at a 150 cm kitchen island?

Two stools fit comfortably at a 150 cm kitchen island, three if you sit closer. Allow 60 cm of width per seat, plus 15 cm clearance at each edge. A 180 cm island fits three easily; a 240 cm island fits four.

Which material holds up best in a kitchen?

Powder-coated metal and oiled or lacquered solid wood handle splashes and grease best. Natural rattan looks beautiful but is sensitive to humidity directly above a sink. Upholstered stools work in the kitchen if the cover is removable or wipeable, such as faux leather or coated fabric.

Swivel or fixed kitchen stools?

Swivel stools are more comfortable: you do not need to pull back to stand up, and you can turn to the counter while cooking. Fixed stools cost less, hold heavier weight more stably, and stay still when children sit on them. For families with small kids, fixed is often the better choice.

Do I need a backrest on a kitchen stool?

For breakfast or quick snacks, a stool without a back is fine and slides fully under the counter. For regular laptop work or long breakfasts, a backrest makes the difference between 30 minutes and two hours of comfortable sitting. Above 45 minutes of seated time, you want a back.
